DiscussionCrown moulding of base for statue of Anthius. Lepcis Magna (Tripolitania). Fourth century. INSCRIPTION Fragmentarily preserved in one line:
Anthii / - - - - - -
'(Statue of) Anthius. …'.
Letter height 7 cm.
DESCRIPTION Fragment of the top moulding of a grey limestone base; H 33, W 55 cm. The fragment contains the signum from a late antique honorific inscription.
The detail of the moulding on our fragment is rare at Lepcis. However, it is similar to that on bases produced from the mid-2nd century to the Severan period (Tantillo & Bigi 2010 ch. 7.3.9).
PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION Found in the Severan forum and formerly preserved in the first taberna south of the apse connecting with the Basilica (Tantillo & BIgi 2010 map I). It was untraceable in 2010.
HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE Only the signum Anthii is preserved of the honorand’s name. The spelling of the signum with -ii (instead of -i) indicates a date in the 4th century, after the period of Diocletian. Ignazio Tantillo & Francesca Bigi
