Flavius Clodius Rufus, of perfectissimus rank, [set this up] to [Iuliana] his eternal patron.'

DESCRIPTION (From CIL and Blanck 1969, 94)
Large marble base damaged at the lower left corner: H 126, W 80, D 52 cm. Our dedication was carved over an earlier erased inscription (Blanck 1969, 94) .

PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION
The base was discovered in the vicinity of S. Pietro in Vincoli, on the Oppian hill. It is now in Copenhagen, in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (inv. n. 884).

HONORAND, AWARDER, AND DATE
The base is dedicated to Tyrrania Anicia Iuliana (PLRE I, 468 Iuliana 3), of clarissimus rank, and wife of Quintus Clodius Hermogenianus Olybrius, one of the most distinguished Roman aristocrats of the time, and consul (PLRE I, 640-642, Olybrius 3).

It was dedicated by Flavius Clodius Rufus, a client of Iuliana, who is otherwise unknown (PLRE I, 785 Rufus 5).

The monument was dedicated in 379, when Olybrius held the supreme honour of the consulship.

FURTHER DISCUSSION
This is a rare dedication to a female honorand and patron. However, Iuliana's husband Olybrius receives most of the attention of the text, with his cursus honorum described in great detail, and with the dedication timed for his consulship. Evidently he, as much as Iuliana, was expected to take note of Rufus' devoted action.
