DiscussionBase for statue (subject unstated), re-erected by Fabius Titianus, prefect of the City. Rome. 350-351. INSCRIPTIONIn four lines. Letter height 5.5-5 cm. Fabius Titianus, / iterum / praef(ectus) urbi, / curavit. 'Fabius Titianus, prefect of the City for the second time, took care [of it].' The inscription records the re-erection of a statue with unstated subject by a prefect of the City. DESCRIPTION (CIL and Gregori) Upper part of white marble base, 37.5 x 47 x 45 cm. The base is damaged at the upper angles and back. The lower part is lost. PROVENANCE AND LOCATION Our base was found out of context in 1873, on the Caelian hill, near the church of SS Quattro Coronati. It was re-used as base for a column in a house destroyed in the fire of Roberto Guiscardo (11th century) (Lanciani 1878, 251). It is now in Palazzo dei Conservatori, Giardino Romani (inv. NCE n. 2890). HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE The inscription records the setting up of a statue with an unstated subject, probably moved from an abandoned or decayed space. The prefect responsible for this dedication was Fabius Titianus, during his second term as prefect of the City (PLRE I, 918-919 Titianus 6). FURTHER DISCUSSION Fabius Titianus was responsible for a number of dedications in Rome during his two terms as prefect. Between 339-341, he dedicated LSA-1328, LSA-1329, , LSA-1331, LSA-1333, LSA-1334, and probably LSA-1332. During his second term, in 350-351, he also moved (besides our base) LSA-1562 (found on the Oppian hill). Main ReferenceCorpus Inscriptionum Latinarum; , VI, 1654 (+p. 4727)Gregori, G. L.
