DiscussionBase for statue, originally of Valens (LSA-1372), re-erected (or re-used for another statue) by Petronius Maximus, prefect of the City. Rome, Forum. 421-439. INSCRIPTIONIn three lines. Letter heght 5-6 cm. Petronius Maximus, / v(ir) c(larissimus), iterum praef(ectus) urb(i), / curavit. 'Petronius Maximus, of clarissimus rank, twice prefect of the City, took care [of this].' DESCRIPTION Re-used marble base, 123 x 86 x 61 cm. The base had mouldings on top and bottom, and it is broken at the right corner. The epigraphic field is framed by moulding on top and bottom. There is a patera at the back (right side of the original base). The right side has the dedicatory inscription of a statue of Valens (LSA-1372). The top is damaged. the original surface is roughly finished, with traces of at least three fixing holes. PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION The base was found in the Roman Forum, in the basilica Aemilia. It is now in the central square of the Forum, near the Sacra Via, Sopr. For.-Pal. n. inv. 12448/12471. HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE The base records a dedication of a statue with an unspecified subject. It is possible that the statue was still the monument of Valens, from the earlier dedication (LSA-1372). This is suggested mainly by the fact that the imperial dedication was not erased. However, it is also possible that this was simply ignored and a new statue was set up. the monument was dedicated by Petronius Maximus, during his second term as prefect of the City (PLRE II, 749-751 Maximus 22).
