'[Statue of] Iunius Quartus Palladius, of clarissimus rank. To a man distinguished in the greatness and nobility of his most outstanding honours, Iunius Quartus Palladius, of clarissimus and illustrious rank, who surpassed the honours of his ancestors and was continually abiding by the res publica, praetor and quaestor ( praetori et quaestori kandidato), notary and tribune, count of the imperial treasury (comes sacrarum largitionum), praetorian prefect of Illyricum, Italy and Africa for six years, consul (consul ordinarius), legate of the most outstanding Senate four times. Because of the strong affection of their kinship, and for the adornment of his house, his brother considered fair to place and set up a statue of him among himself and his family.'

The inscription records a private dedication to an important imperial official.

DESCRIPTION (CIL)
Marble base, 123 x 61 x 61 cm. The base has mouldings on top and bottom. The epigraphic field is not perfectly smooth, suggesting the erasure of an earlier inscription. The top of the base has one dowel hole towards each side. There are two semi-circular holes towards the back, indicating that the base was affixed to a wall.

PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION
Our base was discovered in 1926 on the Aventine hill, 20 m. to the East of via di S. Sabina, near the monastery of S. Anselmo. As the inscription informs us, it was originally set up in the house of the family, or of Palladius' brother (the awarder: see Guidobaldi 1995, 151). The base is now in the Capitoline Museums, in Giardino Caffarelli, inv. n. 2255

HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE
Iunius Quartus Palladius was consul ordinarius in 416, and praetorian prefect of Illyricum, Italy and Africa between 416 and 421 (PLRE II, 822 Palladius 19). The statue was set up by his brother, whose name is not recorded.
