DESCRIPTION (from Poinssot, 1938, 39-40)
Rectangular base ('bloc rectangulaire'), broken on the left and at the base ('brisée à gauche et en bas').

PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION
Found in Béchateur by M. G. Vermandel in 1937. There is no published record of its present location.

HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE
The honorand, Valentinian I, was Augustus from 364 to 375.

Like almost all late antique imperial statues in Africa, our statue was probably ordered by the city itself, though (again following common practice) it was careful in the inscription to give reflected credit to the current governor, Petronius Claudius, governor (proconsul) of Africa in 368-70 (PLRE I, 208, Claudius 10). Claudius' proconsulship provides the closest dating for our dedication.
