'... to a man of illustrious family, whose integrity and justice Africa has attested, Antonius Marcellinus, of clarissimus rank, governor (proconsul) of the province of Africa; the most splendid council (ordo) of the colony of Bulla Regia set [this] up to its patron.' Letter height 4-6 cm. DESCRIPTION Statue base moulded at bottom and broken at top; H 130, W 72, D 56 cm. The front and left sides are smoothly finished, the right side is finished with a claw, and the back is roughly finished. The surface is worn; the left side is damaged in its lower portion. PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION The inscription was found in 1906 in the courtyard of the temple of Apollo at Bulla Regia. There it is still standing. HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE Antonius Marcellinus, the honorand, was governor (proconsul) of the province of Africa (PLRE I, 548 -9 Antonius Marcellinus 6). He was praetorian prefect of Italy, Illyricum and Africa in 340 and consul in 341; he must have held the lower ranking office in Africa some time before 340. The inscription was set up by the council (ordo) of Bulla Regia.
