Late third to fourth century INSCRIPTIONPartly preserved in five lines: ------ /(1) [---]VQ[---] / v(ir) p(erfectissimus) p(raeses) / p(rovinciae) R(aetiae) / Secundinus / praef(ectus) legionis /(5) eiusdem '... of perfectissimus rank, governor (praeses) of the province of Raetia (and) Secundins, prefect of the same legion'. Letter height not recorded. DESCRIPTION Lower portion of a rectangular limestone base or altar with mouldings at bottom, H 76, W 71, D 53 cm (see also below, 'Honorand, Awarder and Date'). There are no traces of reuse. PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION The inscription was found in 1899/1900 during construction work on the property Salzburger Straße 1 in Regensburg; it possibly belonged to an antique hall. The inscription is now in Regensburg, Historisches Museum inv. no. 54. HONORAND, AWARDER AND DATE The upper portion of the inscription with the name of the honorand is now lost. The awarders were a governor (praeses) of the province of Raetia (lines 2-3) whose name is likewise lost (PLRE I Anonymus 92), together with a prefect of a legion (this must be the legio III Italica which was stationed in the area). It is not certain whether the two men set up a statue (possibly to an emperor, or to a deity?), or whether they set up an altar (see above, 'Description'). The earliest possible date for the governor's title is the late 3rd century.
