'To our lord Zeno, eternal Augustus.' The inscription with the honorand in the dative displays one key feature of earlier Latin honorific inscriptions on statue bases. ADDITION 4/7/2014: Gauthier et al. 2010 read the extant bit of the inscription as a consular date: ' [in the year of the consulship] of our lord Zeno, eternal Augustus'. Letter height 4-6 cm. DESCRIPTION (from CIL) Stone broken into two pieces (a and b). There is no description given by CIL, the only publication of this inscription, and no indication of how complete the inscription is. No published photo, and no measurements. ADDITION 4/7/2014 DESCRIPTION (from Gauthier et al. 2010) Two adjoining fragments of a sarcophagus; the beading for the lid is preserved on the upper face; H 32, W 74, D 12 cm. PROVENANCE AND LOCATION Fragment (a) of the inscription was found on private ground in Salona in the region of the late antique cemetery of Monastirine before 1902, the year of the edition of CIL III suppl. 2 ('in casa Dom. Gaspic non longe a coemeterio Monastirine'). It was presumably found after 1886, since it is not recorded in Bulic's catalogue of the inscriptions in the Split museum (Bulic 1886). It is now in the Split museum, inv. no. 401 B. Fragment (b) was found in Salona, likewise before 1902 and after 1886, and is now in the Split museum, inv. no. 364 A. HONORAND AND DATE The honorand, Zeno, was Augustus 474-91. FURTHER DISCUSSION It is very unclear what this dedication relates to; at such a late date it is unlikely to refer to a statue. ADDITION 4/7/2014: After the re-edition by Gauthier et al. 2010 there is no reason left to consider this a possible statue base.
