DiscussionBase for statue of Iulius Eubulidas, governor of Tuscia and patron of Interamna. Interamna Nahars (Tuscia et Umbria). Early to mid fourth century INSCRIPTION: In 8 lines:
Iulio Eubulidae/ c(larissimo) v(iro) corr(ectori) Tusciae/ Xviro praefecto/ aerariis Saturni/ ob inlustria ipsius/ merita et amorem iux/ta cives ordo inte/ramnatium patrono.
'To Iulius Eubulidas, of clarissimus rank, governor of Tuscia, member of the college of 10, prefect of the treasury of Saturn, for his distinguished services and love for the city, the ordo of Interamna [dedicated this] to its patron.'
Epigraphic field: 60 x 62 cm; letters 5-6 cm.
DESCRIPTION (based on personal inspection): White/greyish marble base with moulding top and bottom on three sides. Upper front moulding is decorated with winged victories carrying shield. The epigraphic field is deep and shows traces of erasure of an earlier inscription. The right side is slightly damaged towards the base, there is a metal repair-clamp at the top; the left side is slightly damaged at top and bottom, with a fissure in the marble running diagonally. The top has been broken at some date and fixed with cement; it has traces of 5 holes, one large and rectangular in the centre, and four round and smaller ones towards the corners; there was once a metal clamp holding pieces together, but it has been removed and replaced with cement. It is not clear whether these holes were used as fittings for a bronze statue. A square lighter area towards the middle of the top was perhaps caused by an object once placed on the base. (see also Coarelli and Sisani 2008, n. 78).
PROVENANCE: The base was discovered near Porta S. Angelo, NW side of town, in the gardens of Geronimo Donato ('Hieronymus Donatus' - CIL), in the vicinity of the late Roman walls (Sisani 2006, 196-197).
HONORAND: Iulius Eubulidas was a member of the senatorial order; he probably established links with the city, becoming its patron, while governor of Tuscia. However, the reference to his own merits and love for the city might suggest a personal link. Eubulidas is the last recorded prefect of the aerarium Saturni.
AWARDER: The ordo of Interamna, to their patron.
DATE: The date of the dedication is uncertain, but it must be before 344, when Eubulidas was appointed vicar of Africa (PLRE I, 287 Eubulidas). Carlos Machado
