INSCRIPTION:
In 13 lines. Epigraphic field 61 x 40 cm.; Letters 3-4.

‘To Pontius Proserius Paulinus Iunior, of clarissimus rank, governor (consularis of Campania, patron by descent, provider to the city, restorer of public works, irreproachable judge. For the merits of his father and his own, the most distinguished council and the most honest people of Puteoli set up this statue.’

DESCRIPTION (based on personal inspection):
Marble base, cut in post-Roman times at the top. The right side has a renaissance inscription: 'Satis/ pro tem/pore/ MCCCCL/ XXVI'. The back, decorated with a 15th century coat of arms, cannot be photographed. Left side has urceus and hole. The front is framed by moulding, dirty with paint. The epigraphic field is rough and deep, indicating re-use.

PROVENANCE AND CURRENT LOCATION
It is very likely that the base came from Pozzuoli, since it was dedicated by the city's ordo et populus. However, the precise provenance is unknown: the renaissance inscription suggests that it was removed by collectors, possibly Trojano Spinelli himself, who commissioned the palace in the 15th century.

The base is in Naples, palazzo Spinelli di Laurino, via dei Tribunali, 362

HONORAND:
Pontius Proserius Paulinus was a member of an aristocratic family with close links with the cities of Campania. He was a relative of Meropius Pontius Paulinus, also governor of Campania and later bishop of Nola. His family links with Puteoli are attested by the reference in the inscription to his position as patron 'ab origine'. He was honoured with other statues in the region (LSA-1934 (originally probably Capua, now Beneventum), LSA-2045 (Formia)). He was governor of Campania in 409 (Camodeca 1971, 261-264 and 1980/1981, 107-109; PLRE II, 848-849 Paulinus 16).

AWARDER:
The statue was dedicated by the ordo et populus Puteolanus, on account of works carried out by Paulinus while governor.

DATE:
The statue was dedicated while Paulinus was governor of Campania. The date of his governorship is based on Seeck's re-reading of CIL X, 1128 = LSA-1862, which mentions the PPO of Italy and Illyricum Caecilianus (Seeck 1906, 233 V; PLRE II, 244-246 Caecilianus 1).
